Profile: Starship Orion
Tuesday, 18 January 2011
Her primary feature is the vast ring around her perimeter, which houses a unique parallel dimension manipulator. This device allows her to manipulate time-space along an unexplored vector; although Orion has yet to explore these dimensions physically, her momentary oscillation between dimensions allows her to pass through any obstacle or enemy ship that threatens her captain and crew.
The technology has yet to be duplicated for use in any other vessel, due to the dimension shift engine's reliance on a biological element: a tiny, telepathic eel rescued just before her planet’s star went super-nova. If not for this unique creature, which seems unable to reproduce, the ship would be vaporized by uncompensated for dimensional vibrations in a mere micron.
Scientific efforts to clone the eel have resulted in specimens that duplicate the electro-magnetic capabilities of the eel, yet lack the telepathic sensitivity required. Luckily for Orion’s crew, the eel’s lifespan is measurable in celestial time. Nevertheless, she is protected by several layers of security and top-secret technology.
