"Zenoids" Theme Music Inspirations
When you watch the animated clip for the contest, what do you "hear"? And what sounds out there inspire you?
For instance, I watched "Tron Legacy" on the Netflix the other day. Awesome soundtrack. Not quite "Partridge Family in Space", but those sounds really got me grooving in a certain direction.
And please post if you have music on your profile that you want to share! I'll make a "inspiring composer of the week" note in the news and on Planet Orpheus!

So who else has every frame of the opening clip seared into their frontal lobe?
I have had a blast listening to the submissions (I like the top ten, but it's a lot of fun going through ALL of the submissions!). Great work, to everyone involved, and I hope MOS has more music contests in the near future!

I started replying here, but wound up writing an epic. Check out my (detailed) response on my MyOuterspace.com blog. I sure hope you get to hear my music soon! But in the meantime it's fun to write about the process.

I totally tried to make my melody line hit with Ziri's eyes and the vampire fangs. ("tried" being the operative word) I also tried using synthy guitar sounds for a futuristic sound. My current "jazz brass and horns" instrument selections are not too great so I really didn't feel comfortable writing the "Jetsons" type track but would love to hear other tracks that follow that style.

I'm always interested in hearing about how different composers pick their sound palettes - in this case, I thought there was lots of room for experimenting! Did anyone really play up the "rock star" factor here with a hard rock score? Or go with that "classic" tv orchestra sound Kewball refers to, making all the time-honored (maybe cliche? but i don't think , at least not yet...) visual hits on the eye blinks, fangs popping out, etc. etc.? I found both ideas tempting and sort of went for a blend of the two, and had a lot of fun tweaking the lead guitars so they had a sort of fun, otherworldly quality that might suit your mainstream alien rock band...

@ PaulaC - yes - i was heavily inspired by that classic sound - in this case the Jetsons. As far as my fave? You're right - hard call. I really really loved all the Loony Tunes reruns, so Stalling is a fave. I DO remember Jonny Quest..loved that show. I think the Jetsons is one of the most brilliant themes ever and is certainly a favourite. Flintstones is a good one too - those brass stabs and that bridge just kills me. i Definitely pulled inspiration for one of my entries from that.

What's your favorite Saturday cartoon TV theme tune? That's a hard call! I might have to go with The Jetsons. Do you remember Johnny Quest? There's so many! Were you inspired by an oldie-but-goody when you wrote your Zenoid theme?

Any bets on how many pieces will include some variation on the classic character "roll call" section!? ;^)

@alpha and abira - totally agree. I try and see what the short story is in the clip , if there is one - sometimes its more of a montage - and go from there. But I can see this set musically in many many ways. Could be 100% guitar pop rock band sound, could be 100% keyboard space band. Could go in so many directions. I myself kept going back to being inspired by classic toons of the 60's and 70's. But I also kept coming back to elements of sitcom themes too. I did a couple hybrids , I also had two other concepts that, while they worked, just weren't as funny or didn't strike me as being about a "Partridge Family in Space" as much as my first two sketches.. So, that's where it took me. But while they are inspired by and sorta set in those eras I definitely created the soundscape with lots of retro synths and textures. It will be very interesting to hear all the different interpretations when it's all over!

That's a good point abirambrizuela. It's one of the reasons I used mostly real stringed instruments instead of spacey synthesizers. When I think of 'band' I think of guitars.

It's super interesting to read the different points of view of the composers. When I saw the video, I thought of something futuristic but then I thought "if there is life on other planets, why it always should be in the future?" then I read the synopsis of the characters and saw that the whole family is part of the band, and seeing the features of Mom and Dad thought that the band could not be playing contemporary music... maybe that's why Ziri gets bored of the gigs (she is the only one with a differen style, and Iggy is may be too young to care about it)
Dad repair things with hand tools, and clothing is quite inspired by the 70's ... I think the music should be inspired by something funny and 70's or 80's style.
