A MOS Function.

Judging from the approach that Mr. Shatner and "Rocket Man" are considering, it appears that one of the functions of MOS is that of quick development and deployment of prototype web or other series which can be picked up online by the masses.  These developments and a record of the online hits can then be used as presentations to networks and other outlets in order to score contracts for continuations of said series.  Then the work can move forward on those projects.

The whole thing tends to eliminate tying up traditional studios in terms of scheduling and assorted production costs, yet the potential for product market penetration would seem to be significant.

Just a thought.

It's an interesting difference - tv writers are used to writing "specs" - essentially getting to cut their teeth on other writer's inventions - and yet novelists and short story writers never do this.

Generations ago, if you wanted to be a storyteller, you got started by re-telling, didn't you? I think we've become fixated on the product to the detriment of the story.

So yes, fanboy you! Yes!

Before starting my own novels I did a few short Dr. Who episodes on my handheld computer. I don't expect them to ever see production but it was a fun exercise. It was also easier because the characters and many of the story line parameters already 'existed.' It built up a momentum that allowed me to write 'Been Blued' in three months.

Considering how some of us on Creatia wrote (and registered) a Star Trek pilot episode, and are working on subsequent episodes, I'd certainly like to think there is enough talent here to make something big happen. For the fans, by the fans seems like a good way to go.

I'm gonna go out on a limb about this one, but could it be that the big man has been lurking and seeing some of the very imaginative things that the posters have been putting forth and has enough faith that the talent in MOS as a whole can make the next "Galactica" or "Star Trek"?

It may be considered a conceit, but I truly think it's a positive one to adhere to. Be cool if we, as a whole, did get some sort of major missive from "The Big S" to put our heads together and crank out some wonderful for the masses just to be ableto thumb out noses and tell people "Yeah, WE did that!"

Interesting article about the how the same "non-traditional" route is invading book publishing . . . http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-gatekeepers-20101226,0,1203901,full.story
