First Person Shooter encyclopedia

hi. my site, http://FirstPersonShooters.net/ is just that, a non-commercial fan-based website for literally anything that has to do with the genre. i am always looking for suggestions (for content, not design) and always take requests for updating certain aspects that YOU would like access to. since there is no money involved in this site, it's not even self-supporting, i cannot apply too much time or technology to it, but all that is coming. in the meantime, you can find screenshots, videos, patches, demos, full games, soundtracks, interviews, you name it, it's either there or i'll put it there as soon as i can.

oh, and did i mention that it is the most complete list of first person shooters ever compiled in this or any other universe? check it out and let me know what you think.

thanks for the input guys, i'll definitely check those out and add as appropriate. some of them i've already rejected long before. my criteria cannot include vehicle-based games (hovertank) and does not include mech games, although i have considered changing the mech policy, there's just too much work to be done already. shogo is actually a mech/fps hybrid but it's included more or less as an exception, as is descent and a couple of others i just felt felt right on the list. But... gotta draw the line somewhere.

I've added Distruptor, and all the mac versions.

Already on the list were Exodus From The Earth, Faceball 2000, Maze War, Midi Maze, The Chronicles Of Riddick: Assault On Dark Athena (Windows version).

Spectre VR seems to be a tank game, so i removed it. mech games may eventually make the cut but vehicle games will not (Necrodome aside)

i recently added a bunch of walkthroughs but in the process (only about half-way done) i started getting to the end of my 500gb hosting space so i had to cut it off. i can't afford to throw any more money at this thing right now so unless i can find free hosting i'll have to seriously curtail my video additions now :(

i have added a php script for screenshots here and there, as i've had time, to display them as thumbnails on their own page. that's about all i'll have time for for awhile. the real project is to make this whole thing based on mysql but i don't have time to learn it and i haven't found a nice simple cms to let me build the site that way. please let me know if you know of something that may qualify.

Wren,
A few missing FPS games that I noticed offhand are:

Battlezone
Battlezone (1998)
Battlezone II: Combat Commander
Disruptor
Exodus From The Earth
Faceball 2000
Hoverforce
Hovertank 3D
Maze War
MIDI Maze
Nova 9: Return Of Gir Draxon
Spectre
Spectre VR (DOS version)
Stellar 7
The Chronicles Of Riddick: Assault On Dark Athena (Windows version)

The reason I included games like Hoverforce, Hovertank 3D, Stellar 7, Nova 9 and Spectre is because I noticed you already had Spectre VR in your list. Also, I do think you should include the mech style games, since they are technically first person shooters in which you primarily fight while on the ground. You already have mech style games like Terra Nova and Shogo listed, so it would be consistent to add the rest.

One addition to the site that might be nice is to include visual walkthroughs for each game. Obviously this would be too much work for just one person, so you could accept submissions from users. For an example, see www.visualwalkthroughs.com.

I know what you said, but I'm going to make one design suggestion. I think the screenshots would be better if they were displayed as thumbnails on the same page as the game information while having the full size images come up in a lightbox fashion so that the user doesn't navigate away from the page when they click one. Just something to consider.

Overall, good work. It looks like a great start to what could become a very comprehensive guide to FPS games.

Interesting is my first impression. Pretty good list. Some information for you:

Not really a shooter; more of an FPS walker but cool: Penumbra series for Windows

These are also on the Mac:
Damage Incorporated
Nexuiz
Tremulous
Unreal
Unreal Tournament
Halo: Combat Evolved (introduced to the world at Macworld NY 1999, Mac last to get it. Ouch.)

Probably others as well. I'd also guess that there are more Linux titles out there.
