The Official Zenoids Theme Music Contest Question Thread
Hello Orpheans!
Orphiods? Orphitrites, maybe. Anyway, instead of fourteen fresh threads - post any important questions you have about the contest here and someone around here will get back to you (probably me). This way, all the answers pile up in one neat little place.
FAQ:
Sorry, there's no official form like the rules state. Just upload your file and it will be associated to your Myouterspace profile for us. Sorry, there's also no email confirmation - if you get the success note on the uploader, that's the site's confirmation.

I hadn't been online in a while and I just saw that the voting has been redone. Congrats to Hop Litzwire. I voted for them. Once I was eliminated after making the top 40, they were my favorite. I'm still hoping there will be other opportunities to write music for the Zenoids episodes, and I hope to be involved!

David, very well said. I was also hesitant to say anything public, as a finalist, but since the ice is broken...
The lobbying/dissing really does need to stop; its really pissed me off reading some of what's come through here recently. There were excellent submissions that were picked, and excellent submissions that weren't. That's to be expected. There will also always be a difference of opinion and taste, and so it will appear to some people that undeserving entries were also chosen. That's also to be expected. But a condescending remark that one can "easily understand the difference of quality between your submission and some other's" is never appropriate. You have your opinion; let your vote reflect that, and let it end there.
Now to the popularity contest issue... its an imperfect system of course, and on one hand we all knew that getting into it. Like David, I admit I used Facebook to advertise this - and for a short time it worked. While I'd like to think that there's not extreme amounts of repeat voting going on, as nairogerg suggests, I'm sure there is. I just hope that the MOS moderators have some system of regulating this, because honestly it is very suspicious when a contestant jumps from 4.5% to 17% in a matter of three hours, at a time when a single vote counts for less than 0.1%. I'd like to win this as much as anyone else, but if I lose I would at least appreciate knowing that I lost fairly. Knowing that my music met certain standards of Giacchino, Shatner, etc. is truly flattering, but if its just not right for the show in the HONEST opinion of the community here, then that's also fine.
Best of luck to all the contestants. It really is an honor being a part of this.

You guys are very kind, thank you Hop, thank you once again David but this is your moment, as I said a long time ago in this forum, the prize is appearing in the top 10, after the top 10 it’s not a music contest anymore, so enjoy your moment David, Michael Giacchino thinks you are awesome! :D now go and take care of your children, let them watch Up or Ratatouille and tell them “that guy thinks I’m awesome” . That’s the great value for you my friend.
My mom calls me from Venezuela once a week from the church in which she works on, and she’s always asking me how close I am to my Oscar hahaha, (She really thinks I’ll be the first Venezuelan obtaining the Academy Award), so I answer “mom, I don’t know if I’ll get there but you have no idea how awesome it feels sharing the road with the people I love”

s.sw,
Logged in to say I really enjoyed davidgsteele's post, particularly the last paragraph. I still think that my entry holds up just as well as the others in the top ten, but in the end, the producers (or whoever else is responsible for choosing the music) chose what they did. That's that. End of story. Davidgsteele's post nailed this point on the head.
That being said, it was a very enjoyable contest, and I liked many of the different approaches people had to scoring the piece. Good luck, top 10!

Yes, I will join the crowd, break my silence and publicly state that, in my opinion, Abiram belonged in the top 10.
As a top 10 er, I do feel honored, but because this is now a "popularity contest" and the winner will be the guy that rallies the most votes through a social media marketing strategy (or open and close browsers to tally more votes), the wind has definitely been taken out of my sails. I admit that on Friday morning, I rallied some votes from a facebook post and watched my percentage go from 4 or 5 to maybe 7. There was clear evidence of increasing my percentage by actually asking for and lobbying for votes.
We all have to ask...what good is it to ask our friends to go to mos.com, click next to our name, and then leave the site? Do we really think people are going to MOS.com and watching all 10 scores? I'd put my money on the answer being "no". Several of my facebook friends, after I asked for support, replied to me in this manner: "done...I voted for you"...meaning...they clicked on the link... voted my name...and immediately left the site.
I have not actively "lobbied" for votes this weekend because I have a family and 2 kids...and well...weekends are for family. My percentage of the vote is about to plummet below 1%...LOL!....I also will not have the time to rally votes over the next two weeks as I will be running my day to day business this week and then leaving town for a holiday break and a wedding on 12-30-11.
When the dust does settle, and after the winner is determined, it would be very cool to know which theme William Shattner, Amanda Tapping, and Michael Giacchino would have selected if they had to make a cut throat decision. That really would be the best honor as, at the end of the day, this is Mr. Shattner's show. It would be very unprofessional to announce this now, but if Agent Smith, William Shattner, and the producers of mos are willing to reveal that information a week or two after the contest winner is announced...either privately to the top 10 contestants or in this forum...that would be very cool.
Finally, none of us in this forum should be dissing other contestants publicly, nor should we be lobbying for a winner. "This guy should win and here's why... and that guy has no business being in the top 10" is not cool in my book, especially in the public forum... Music is about as subjective as it gets. I can't tell you how many times over my 20 year professional career I have competed for :30 TV spots against 5 or 10 other composers...you win some...you lose some...you lose more often than you win in the highly competitive market for 30 TV spots...you'll never know why a client picks one over the other...there is nothing you can do about it anyway accept move on to the next opportunity. For all you younger composers in this forum (30 or less)...get used to it...crowd sourcing music opportunities is on the rise and I, unfortunately, see no end in sight. I do miss the days where you got a call from the producer and writer (of a TV or Radio Spot) and they just awarded you the gig.
Good luck to all others in the top 10.

I just listened to the Top 10 and voted for my favorite. The final entries are really good.
But more than that, hats off to MOS for the "Meet Your Top 10" article... It's great to learn a bit more about the method (and madness!) of some of those involved. Some hella credits out there, guys. Thanks for giving the rest of us some insight into your creative process and how you approached this project.
Kudos and good luck,
Marc

Hey all. Quick question for the thread... How long are we all going to pretend we don't know you can just close your browser, re-open it, and vote for yourself again and again?

I don't know if it's cool for someone who lucked into getting into the final round to be posting right now, but since I receive messages from the board to my email inbox, I have seen my name pop up a couple of times, so it just felt rude not to respond and say thanks when a couple of the mentions were compliments. I've never been in danger of being mistaken for the coolest dude in the world anyway, so post I shall!! Anyhoo....thanks, and I'm glad some of you are diggin' our take. It's been fun to see the community responses on the different approaches and great to participate in it. As someone who composes TV scores and tunes for a living - and not just some buzzard who's shown up with his band to crash the party - I definitely would have a good deal to say about the "action cues" discussion, but I'll save that for a later time. When I came to MyOuterSpace, I was initially looking for another community through which to let people know that my concept band BOBGOBLIN, which had a major-label deal from around 1996-2000 before we changed our name and went another direction, was returning to action under that moniker with a new record and a rejuvinated energy...then I noticed the theme contest right off, of course, and that has made for a very fun thing to do. But as I came to MOS for other reasons outside of the contest, I'll be hanging out when it's all over - I look forward to participating in more discussions on these and other topics when the dust has settled. Again, thanks for the compliments, comrades, and good luck to the others in the final round!
BTW, DDP - Man, with the Q1 season coming up, I'm getting slapped all upside the head with my TV stuff, and you posting a "Mr. Show" below put all my work to a complete stop for 30+ minutes! Curse you, DDP!! Seriously though - I know every line from every Mr. Show, but I had to stop and watch that one and more again. Crying all over again.
Also, for what it's worth, Abiram's was one of my favs too. Great work, Abiram! And listening to your other stuff....anyone that can pull off the s**t that you pulled with Reason 6 Orkester is a bad-ass in my book! Before I started getting real TV music gigs and could justify purchasing the tools I have now, I was using Reason Orkester 1.5 or 2 to do "orchestral" stuff, so I know what a bitch that can be. Well done!

Let's forget Mr. Giacchino's Oscar Acceptance Speech, because effort is basically a waste of time for the industry.
http://cerebralitch.blogspot.com/2010/03/best-oscar-acceptance-speech-ever.html
This industry (unfortunately including Mr. G.) will choose David Keenan to the top 10 over Abiram Brizuela, Andrew Esquer, Rob Dehlinger and some other professional composers as many times they want, so, sadly the fact talks louder than the speech.
David, I don't mean to offend you, but as a musician you can humbly understand what I mean I think you can easily understand the difference of quality between your submission and some other's even when you are in fact in the top 5 at this moment. I'm not saying you are a bad composer, I believe that everyone can improve and I really believe in effort as the only way to do it.
When things happen like this, I wish Walt Disney revives to return to the times when things were made of good quality or simply they weren't made at all.

DDP,
It would be nice to see a number of voters next to the percentage, to find out how many more votes were made beside our 300's. Or at list the total number of voters.
