I've never used the Axe FX, but I owned a Pod X3 Live for about 3 months and sold it. I didn't like the sounds at all. I currently use Guitar Rig 4 for a lot of the home studio stuff I do and for playing live. It sounds pretty good and is not difficult to dial up tones, but offers a tremendous amount of flexibility for those who like to push the envelope.

I haven't tried either. Since what I need to produce has a time limit, and there's never much time, I don't usually have time the old-fashioned way anymore... miking and using amps. I started out with "Eleven" on my D.A.W. (Pro Tools) but now use "Guitar Rig 5"... there are many more options and the presets don't require as much tweaking. Plus the presets are more toward what sound I am looking for usually.

I've heard great things about the Axe FX but I've never tried one. I'm using one of the newer Line6 POD HD400 units and I'm liking the sounds in it quite a bit. The sound editor software for it is a must though, since it makes it very quick and easy to dial up the sounds you're looking for. As compared to the earlier versions of the POD, this one sounds more realistic to my ears.
I think that you would be happy with either the Line6 stuff or the Axe Fx. It all depends on how much money you want to spend. I think that the Axe FX is a little more pricey.

You probably won't like my reply because I'll say neither. I prefer a wad of pedals. I'm typically against the sound of pre-programmed guitar effect machines, like the Line 6 products, etc...I always tend to gravitate back towards an old fasion tube amp with pedals.
