Toon Boom
Hey everyone, I just joined MyOuterSpace.com I'm an actor turned writer turned animator. I've been teaching myself Toon Boom for the last 6 months. I've learned a lot, but still have a long way to go. Wondering if anyone knows of any classes on it in the Los Angeles area, or even would want to start a meet-up for animation ideas, help, encouragement, etc. Non-L.A. residents, I'd be happy to hear from you too. Let me know what you think. :-) ~ Justin Marchert

That must be the glitch--the Photoshop files. Vector is usually much smaller. I do all my originals in vector. Do you import them and leave them as bitmaps or do you vectorize them on import? That might help.

Hi Zeb,
Yeah, I've been corresponding on the forum regularly. They're having trouble locating my problem too.
And they only seem to give you so much time per day.
The thing is, the problem project ("Gumdrop the Unicorn") is made up mostly of Photoshop documents.
I just tried exporting a different project made up of vector drawings, and it exported with no problem.
So I'm trying to determine if using Photoshop documents for cut-out animation is a bad idea.

Justin, I was thinking more about this issue, you should go to the Toon Boom Animate forum (http://www.toonboom.com/support/forums/animate/) and ask in the Technical Support section. There are lots of users with more experience than I and TB has a rep who answers questions on a daily basis. They should have the answers you need.

Wow, I stepped out for a bit and there has been a lot of action here regarding your question, Justin! Metal has a lot of good points. Yeah, you've gotta try this and that to get the best results. The 1280x720 are the dimensions for the scene settings, and the render can be the same. For sure you can use smaller and a slower frame rate but I am using this cause I want HD. Actually, I've heard the best method is to do low res MOVs for editing purposes and once you get things how you want, render the final as PNGs and replace the MOVs. PNGs will give you the highest quality, they're just not practical for editing. You will get one PNG per frame.
Back to your original question though, I don't really understand why the extremely long render time. I do MOV, Animation, Millions of colors, quality high, key frame rate 24, no sound--I add sound in Sony Vegas when I composite. And yeah, that's it. I run WinXP, 4 GB RAM, dual core--maybe you need to close any unnecessary apps to ease the load on your CPU? I'm not a computer whiz so maybe someone else has a better solution.

hi again, if you want a faster export reduce resolution and frame rate to use less memory, open your project in Animate and go to the main menu and select Animation Properties and type 720x480 or smaller and type a smaller frame rate, but don't select make it the default size and don't save your file, it will take some time to render but not as long as before, honestly you have to experiment rendering with different settings until you find a workflow that suits you, if you are testing renderings use small resolutions, it will save you time, if everything comes ok then use the larger size

Thanx Metal,
I left a message for Zebtoonz before I got your reply, but take a look at it. I listed my current Toon Boom Animate settings. Let me know if/what I should change for a faster export.

Hi Zebtoonz,
Do you mean 1280 X 720 should be the "Settings: Compression Type" or it should be the "Size: Dimensions"?
Also, tell me if any of these settings sound wrong:
Compression type is HDV 1080p24
The frame rate is set to "current" (Which means 24, right?)
Key frame every 24 frames.
Frame reordering box is checked.
Data rate is "Restrict to 512 kbits/sec
I think my "Size" was 1920 X 1080 HD, but I changed it to your 1280 X 720 HD (But I didn't see a difference)
My sound compressor is "none."
My "Prepare for Internet Streaming" box is checked, and "Fast start" is selected.
Anything sound wrong?
Thanx-a-lot,
Justin

hey congrats on the gig, did you find out how much is Toon Boon Harmony?
oh for your render time animation multiply frames times x seconds for total frames 25fps x 120sec=3000 total frames or mult 12-15fps x 120 if it's web, the fewer the frames the more choppy your animation but less work, the higher number of frames the smoother but a lot more work, rendering time factors are, frames per second 12-15 for web and 25 for tv and 24 for film, and the larger the resolution and higher frames per second the more memory and time to render, 320x240 for Web, for tv 720x540, NTSCDV 720X480, and for High Definition HD 1280x720, if you are testing render small size, AVI's are extremely large and take a long time, stick to Quicktime files and select H264 and not Animation, Animation takes a long time, use it unless it's a final render and it has to be real high quality, I learned that information from this book Flash and After Effects by Chris Jackson the guys an expert

Don't know what's up with the Zenoids. Seems to be stuck. As for your outstanding export speed--something is wrong. What format are you exporting to? MOV? 115 frames should be like 5 minutes. What are your scene settings? I use 1280x720, 24 fps.
