Best Villainy in Scifi

There are plenty iconic bad guys in science fiction. Romulans. Klingons. Daleks. The list goes on, but of all the scifi I've read or watched, I'd have to go with one particular race of bad guys: The Cardassians.

A Klingon will look for a fight. A Romulan will stab you in the back. A Dalek will blast things while shouting "Exterminate!" - but a Cardassian...you never know what a Cardassian will do. They could be your best freind and neighbor for 20 years only to shiv you when you least expect it. Or you think they are your enemy and rivil for years, only to find out the whole time they were on your side. The race is one of the most unpredicable, sneaky, and conniving race I've ever seen. A cardassian will get inside your head, crawl around, and leave behind some of the nastiest mental scars - and probably some physical ones as well, if you survive.

Doctor Who: The Master. In fiction, Dune: Baron Harkonnen. The current Biggest Bad of the fiction world, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, could have been one of those cautionary tales that prove "Never Explain the Secret Evil" - but I think she did a good job.

But I like the OP's main point. Ruthlessly practical is pretty hardcore, and as Science Fiction as a genre goes, its doing the good work of showing us one of our main flaws. Our amazingly resilient ability to keep placing systems, power and money over ourselves.

Definitely all villains, JD. Hard choices to be sure. I also hate to admit but Karl Ruprecht Kroenen from Hellboy scares me to death! What a creeper! He just won't die!!

It depends on what you consider most villainous. For pure brutality I would have to go with the Reavers from Firefly. For treachery I would go with Gaius Baltar of Battlestar Galactica or the Cardassians from Deep Space Nine. For the most efficient overall destruction its a tossup between the Daleks from Dr. Who and the Borg from STTNG. I'm not sure if the Daleks or the Borg destroyed more planets. And don't forget about Dr. Frank-N-Furter from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. You know Brad and Janet won't.

I dunno, I'm not one to root for Species 8472. Even the Borg couldn't assimilate them. Glad the Voyager crew found a work around. Go Janeway!

The Cardassians, I think, are political-social pragmatists the will do whatever it takes to promote the welfare of Cardassia and the Cardassian race as they precieve it.

Watch out, Transbot9, that people don't mistake your bad guys for some stupid gals on reality TV, ;-). Here is a stab at your topic, Chiwetel Ejiofor, the Operative in the movie Serenity. To quot Reverend Book, Ron Glass, "The kind of guy they'll send believes hard... They'll come at you sideways."
