About me
I'm an amateur science fiction / fantasy writer, with one book and a bunch of short stories under my belt.

I'm a part-time security guard making too little money to sustain myself, so I'm always looking for more work and something to get me through the next month. Hopefully something will finally work...

I did manage to sell a single copy of my book, Chains of Loss, on Ebay. It fetched $287.50, so I have a hunch that I'm doing something right.

Why do so many of my problems come from my car? I guess it's predictable, what with working pizza delivery.

I know a great place for working pizza delivery, Myrtle Beach, SC. Big money can be made there, and it has the added advantage of no snow. I never did it myself, but I've heard some wild stories.

I see by your photos you are a gaming geek, RPG's. Responding to Transbot9's observation that MOS lacks a planet for non-computer gamers I started a discussion on Galaxy. It seems to be tailor made for you.

Hey, ESPN? Not everyone on MOS is as big a nerd as us. I'm sure there are some nerds who are closet sports fans as well.

Man, it sucks that you didn't get the job. Best not to lose hope. I mean, I'm doing something I never thought I'd do. Its different from what I was doing and what I thought I wanted to do, but there's some enjoyment in it.

I started applying to random things (stuff I'm underqualified, overqualified, etc) with the attitude of "oh, what the hell" and it got some sort of results. Actually, I didn't even get the job I applied for. They had another posting coming up and decided to give me a shot at that one since I wasn't qualified for what I had applied to, but my work history impressed them enough.

I don't know if that'll help at all, but I'm wishing you luck.

Grats on the engagement, and don't sweat the criticism. The quote I return to over and over again is "I like what I've done better than the *way* you *didn't* do it." Behind every destructive criticism is a blocked artist.

You are so welcome :)
Talanic,

I'm so sorry to hear you were on the receiving end of some harsh criticism. It can feel like the whole world is against you at times like that. The good news is that it's not. Contests often claim to be open minded opportunities to submit something creative, but it comes down to the judges...and their own personal ideal of what THEY think is good or bad. This is way too subjective, and I would categorize crits from this group akin to a fruit vendor telling you which car you should buy. They may know a little about it from their own experience, but are likely not an expert on EVERY vehicle. Try to keep in mind that contests are only going to yield one winner...try to find ways to submit your work for notice that will result in a more genuine review by someone knowledgeable in your writing genre. Seek out an editor, publisher, or fellow author whose opinion you respect.

Feeling "utter fury" is a reactionary choice you make. Letting go of that is also a choice you make. The sooner you can let go of it, the better off you will be emotionally, intellectually, and physically. Shrug off the anger mantle and leave it in the back of the closet (change shirts if it helps you)...close the door and walk away. Go to a window and look until you see something that makes you smile...focus on that for at least five minutes. Now forget about the crits and go back to writing smilies/smiley.gif

Sending positive thoughts today and always,

Anastasia smilies/smiley.gif

Thanks Ana. I'm trying agent submissions now, since I'm out of the ABNA contest. I found that the contest was a good way to motivate myself to finish the book and edit it; I hoped to win, but never expected it. In its way, it did me plenty of good.
