Interview - Rob Powers

VFX Guru Rob Powers Talks About His Days with Cameron and Avatar

Rob Powers, professional Director of Entertainment and Media Development at NewTek, has the distinction of developing and supervising the world’s first “Virtual Art Dept” for James Cameron’s epic Avatar. Rob Powers has a solid set of credentials that should inspire the citizens of Planet Anteros. Prior to his work on the film Avatar, Powers also worked as Lead Creature Designer and CG Supervisor on James Cameron’s Aliens of the Deep, as well as TV shows such as Ally McBeal (he is responsible for the infamous “dancing baby”). He also created the first 64 bit animation on Windows for Bill Gates. Expect to see his work on the forthcoming Stephen Spielberg film The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, based on the comic strips written and illustrated by Georges Remi under the pen name Herge. For Avatar, Powers relied heavily on Newtek’s LightWave software, which is the leading standard in rendering and polygonal modeling. He was able to use LightWave to create a virtual camera and a virtual set that James Cameron could see in real time as it was being shot. Expect to see more of Rob Powers and NewTek LightWave as they continue to set new standards for CGI and visual effects.
