My dear kaedance, they use excerpts to sell your book, but I suppose you could remove your book from Amazon and they could fiendishly try to sell it anyway, or maybe they would get even by posting your excerpts out of context with unrelated material to make your story seem silly...hmm sounds scary...
But seriously, I think there are about 700,000 e-titles and only about 300,000 ever seem to sell anything at all in a given month so the odds aren't that bad, considering.

Hmm, that fine print is a bit concerning. Seems like Amazon will be able to use excepts of your work indefinitely, and Penguin gets a pretty good grip on the publishing rights of the quarter-finalists- even if they don't get picked as winners. But you could certainly do worse than having Penguin fighting over the rights to publish your stuff.
