What 3D program do you use and why?

I kind of know what's out there by name and what I've read.  I've even dabbled in Bryce and Poser, but I want to get a senese for what the rest of the community is using.  Especially when they are doing characters, creatures, and ships.  So what are you using and why do you like it?

I use Lightwave, have use3d it for years now. The program is amazingly versatile, including everything from simple basic chroma-keying to general basic composite work. I have gotten fairly decent in modeling, reasonably good at rigging (especially non-standard things like wings) and I am now delving into scripting to get some of the things I need done in a faster manner.
I also am a hobbyist and seldom can work more than an hour or so a day

3D modeling (and simple animation) is a hobby of mine, rather than my being a pro. I've dabbled with Poser and Maya LE (that was in conjunction with using Unreal Ed). Unless you own a production studio and can afford expensive programs, I highly recommend Blender. Others have here indicated why they like it (or other preferred apps), but I'd reiterate that Blender is free, there are tons of tutorial reads and videos out there and once you learn the interface and get used to it, it then becomes intuitive. I'm not worried about deadlines and workflow as much as results that I like. If rendering takes too long, there are inexpensive rendering farms out there, such Green Button.

I use Blender in conjunction with the Gimp and Unity 3D (there you see a pattern: free). I'll create my tiling textures in Gimp (not everything needs image textures since Blender can create patterned textures, but I think detail adds to the finished product), import them into Blender and of course create the models; finally I like to import the package (models and textures) into Unity.

Take a look at my profile for images of models in Blender and Unity, as well as my videos in Unity to see what a simpleton like me can do with such powerful tools. :-)

It all depends on what I'm trying to do. I have several versions of ToonBoom for 2D animation and the latest version of Blender (2.57) for 3D. Also both types of ToonBoom Storyboard. Lots of different paint and photo programs by Adobe, Corel, and others, several edit softwares and other support programs. A good carpenter owns more than one hammer and saw, so should a good independent animator. The right tool for the job is not always the some tool.
Be Well.

Blender and Poser as well as Makehuman.
I used to fool around with Shade 8.5 Standard.
I'm thinking about getting Shade 12 Professional Edition though.
I hope I'm not the only person in this community who uses Blender.

I am currently learning to use Blender and it is an amazing software program, it is very intricate to learn, but if go on youtube or the blender.org site you can what this software is capable of from other users, it can make almost any type of file, can be used in after effects or photoshop or any other post editing application, and the best part about it its a FREE download open source application, no license fees, just the willingness to learn to use, and there are many tutorials out there to make things a little easier, if you're low on cash it's the way to go, and it will do what the other 3D super expensive programs will do, yes it's true what Transbot 9 said about learning the keys to do things, but all 3D software programs that I've seen require learning a ton of information to use

The 3 major programs use to be 3DS Max (computer gaming), Lightwave (TV production), and Maya (advertising) - unless you were with a big company that used an in-house program (ILM and Pixar have their own programs). 2 of the 3 are currently owned by Autodesk. My information may be a little old, though.

I use 3DS Max myself; I'd use Blender, but the makers of Blender are insistant of having a program where you have to memorize keystrokes. I don't 3D model often enough to remember a long list of keystrokes just to do basic things.

3DSMax is my main 3D app, although I've dabbled in Maya and Softimage.
Over the years I've tried moving over to Maya to create more options for working in the vfx industry, but when the jobs come in I drift back to Max to stay productive. The new 2012 version looks like they may have fixed one of the biggest issues with it; the speed of the viewport.

I use Lightwave.
Why? Because it does everything I need it to do. It is also fast at what I need it to do. I don't need a support group of scripters to be backing me up every time I want to do something.
If a person has to for whatever reason go free software Blender is indeed the way to go.

I wouldn't mind hearing about the newer versions of bryce, hear they're more compatible with poser. I think I can remember it was mentioned (possibly in the manual) that the newer version can import earlier versions of bryce and export most of the boolean into mesh, with the exception of trees and meshballs. I've got some old stuff on the PC and MAC versions that I stuck on some jump drives, so i'd be curious to know..

I remember Blender's game(er, physics) engine looks pretty cool, found the interface kinda confusing tho', when tinkering with it..seems like they had some neat random ganerators too, for plantlife and such.

Seems like the MAC and PC bryce files weren't compatible in the bryce program but maybe the MAC and PC poser were or at least when opened in another program, such as blender.. or something strange like that :/
