And the sign says "Long-haired geeky people need not apply"

With all of the movies and television shows about programmers, hackers, and assorted technological experts (geeks), a person would think that the film industry would be flush with jobs for them.  There seem to be many opportunities for people using digital graphic programs or 3D modeling programs as well as massive amounts of technology for sound, special effects, etc.  That said, why does it seem there are so few available jobs in entertainment for the geeks themselves?  I know they have to be out there.  Or, outside of the occasional technical expert gig, do the actual programmers, designers and technicians of the products used daily in the entertainment industry have little to no place in it?

Your first comment is almost dead on Scott. I was lamenting the lack of technical jobs in the film industry. I was mostly talking about programming jobs but also electronics, engineering, IT jobs, etc.

And, NOOO you don't want to see me act. I know many things and one of them is I have no business in front of a camera. That said, I think I would do well many places behind the camera.

I started this discussion to get reactions from a base of people who have knowledge of the film industry. It comes down to this; there are employment websites for actors, stage hands, directors, producers, extras, etc. I know there have to be tech jobs out there related to the film industry. Are there websites where a person can look for such a position? If not, there should be.

It is freaky in the song by "Five Man Electrical Band". I decided to wordplay it for my discussion title.
On the discussion subject, I'm not sure I was clear on my meaning. I'm talking about the geeks that design the programs and equipment others use. For example, some people on here use Lightwave. There is a programmer/team somewhere that designed and wrote that program from nothing.

I always thought the line was "long haired freaky people". Maybe it's just me. I am known to suffer from dyslyrica. I could have sworn the one song says "excuse me while I kiss this guy" instead of "excuse me while I kiss the sky."

Ah, well, in that case, welcome to the Recovery.

Oh, I'm not looking at doing any acting, or even computer programming. I'm an artist looking to do special effects, animation, editing, even camera work.

It looks to me as you're lamenting the lack of programming jobs in the film industry. But, what would they be doing? Custom graphics tools development, I suppose, and a few of the studios (LucasArts, Pixar) in fact do that. But there's just not a need for hundreds of software engineers. A few score maybe, plus the people working for Adobe, Sun, and Autodesk, I suppose.

Or, are you looking for directors to cast geeks in acting roles for geek characters? Do you have a SAG card? Any experience acting? Just being a geek in real life doesn't mean you can play a geek character in a play or film production. It just doesn't work that way. Actors get hired to perform nearly every role you see on the screen.

Maybe it's all about the hair. What about all us short-haired geeky people? I think we're under-represented as a group.

Sometimes people are intimidated by the uber-intelligence that seems to all too apparent in geeks. I like to allow people to discover my intelligence after they've gotten to know me. Hit them over the head with it when you first meet and all is lost.

I agree, I have a degree in animation, and have all the tools at home to practice with. But yet, actual work is hard to find. May have to start up my own homebrew animation studio.
